When Greggs recently launched its vegan sausage rolls it received an unexpected boost to the bottom line, with sales driving the share price up dramatically. However rumours in the City seem to suggest that the number of donor vegans is drying up.
‘When we started, there was only a small demand for products made from vegans, so we assumed that the relatively short supply chain would be adequate,’ said a spokesman for Greggs today. Some commentators are suggesting that the core material for the vegan sausage rolls might include vegetarians and the ‘odd omnivore’ to bulk out the material, a charge Greggs denies.
‘We only use natural vegans in our vegan range, but admit that the supply chain is getting overtaken by the demand for this product,’ said the spokesman. The share price did rise slightly when the company announced it was launching a Brexit politician sausage roll. ‘May contain nuts,’ cautioned the spokesman.
