IAAF Chairman, Seb Coe today launched an astonishing attack on the BBC for their coverage of the World Athletics Championships and in particular on presenter Gabby Logan.
The Championships currently underway in Doha, state capital of Qatar, has seen athletes performing in front of virtually empty stadiums, a fact which Mr Coe believes the BBC should keep secret.
‘Gabby should stick to what she knows best said Coe, she’s wonderful on Match of the Day, but she’s out of her depth when discussing where and when major international sporting events are held.
‘Twice I heard her mention the sparse crowds and questioning whether Athletes should be running in 39oC heat, but not once has she mentioned my new Jacuzzi or the fact that my bank now comes to me for a loan, or that I drive a Ferrari. None of this would have been possible without holding the games in Qater. She doesn’t have the remotest idea about the amount of time it took to organise these Championships, setting up dummy companies, offshore accounts and endless meetings in empty car parks.’
Asked to explain the lack of spectators, Lord Coe said that ‘unfortunately, although the people of Qatar love athletics, the games did clash with a big Camel racing festival and also Qatari TV were showing the finals of I’m a Sheik, kiss my arse.’
