‘It just happened,’ said septuagenarian Geoff Taylor of his big breakthrough. ‘After months of mistakenly calling Chloe by the name of Tom’s ex-wife, I just got it.’ ‘He was doubly pleased with himself because it happened just in time for Tom and Chloe’s visit on Boxing Day,’ his wife Jan explained.
However, when forty-three-year-old Tom arrived on Boxing Day without Chloe, telling his parents they had split up just the week before, Geoff’s achievement, as he saw it, was undone: ‘I now know her name for no reason. And I’ve swapped the anxiety I used to get from thinking I’d call her by the wrong name, for the anxiety caused by trying to not mention her at all.’
Jan was more positive: ‘It is a shame. They were good together. But it’s not all bad: I think I’ve still got the receipt for her Christmas present somewhere. And Tom’s finally got himself a haircut.’
