EastEnders fans are in shock this morning after a show insider confirmed rumours that in this year’s Christmas Day episode a character is to be seen smiling.
One cast member said: ‘It’s thrown us all into turmoil as nobody can quite believe it really. I mean, somebody smiling on Albert Square beggars belief. What next, actual laughter and a light comedy storyline? They’ll be calling us Fawlty Towers before much longer!’
‘This is well mental, geezer!’ agreed Danny Dyer who plays the show’s Mick Carter. ‘Cast members are being issued with redacted scripts showing only their own lines, and even though that’s helped the overall standard of acting, nevertheless our fans are not likely to accept someone smiling.’
It may be remembered viewers once thought Arthur Fowler had smiled in an 1985 episode, but producers moved quickly to scotch the idea following a deluge of furious viewer complaints.
A hastily released refutal was issued at the time: Arthur Fowler was portraying a nasty bout of trapped-wind following a particularly indigestible bacon butty in Ali’s caff.
