Widowed mum-of-two Angela Sophes is celebrating a promotion and pay rise that at last covers her family’s cost of living.

Sophes leaves the house at 6:15am every morning, before returning to tuck her children in by 7:30pm. ‘Thankfully, the Asda clothes I’m forced to dress them in are too plain to appeal to paedophiles’, announced Sophes, ‘so I’m slightly less terrified about them walking to nursery on their own. And I know they hurry straight home to the kettle I leave on the floor, so they can share a Pot Noodle if they feel a bit faint.’

Sophes celebrated her new £32k salary by treating the family to a Muller fruit corner; ‘the most nutritious thing they’ve eaten since 2007’. Her children can now afford to take a sausage roll for lunch almost every day, supplemented with Jammy Dodgers on special occasions.

Sophes is unable to quit her job and claim benefits, as her children were tragically born into a happy marriage. ‘She’s refusing to have five more kids or fake an injury in the workplace’, complained Social Services. ‘Some people just won’t help themselves.’

The Daily Mail has warned that the £2.5 billion that ex-Haringey social services boss Sharon Shoesmith hopes to get in compensation for her sacking over the Baby P case could plunge the UK into a full-scale 1929-style depression.

The newspaper claims that the Chancellor, George Osborne, is ‘urgently revising his plans’ in expectation of the £3 billion pay-out and the Greek-style financial crisis that will inevitably follow, with businesses going bankrupt, British workers forced onto the dole and, most worryingly, house prices going into freefall.

‘If the government caves in to this evil woman’s demands, we could see a return to gangs of mainly foreign urchins roaming the streets of London not seen since the days of Fagin,’ the paper warns.

It also says that ‘not one, but hundreds of thousands of mainly British Baby Ps could perish’ as money earmarked for alleviating child poverty could end up in Shoesmith’s grubby, evil pockets. ‘Any suggestion that she should receive even a penny of taxpayers’ money is political correctness gone mad,’ said an editorial.

The paper says that its readers demand that Mrs Shoesmith give her £3.5 billion pay-out to the UK Border Agency, since anything else would be ‘an insult to the memory of Princess Diana’.

Government ministers have warned that heads will literally roll if negligence is proved. The girl has been identified as Juliet Capulet, whose family live in the centre of town. Her abductor is believed to be Romeo Montague, who was apparently well known to social workers on the rough estates of Montecchio Maggiore for pursuing vendettas against rich families. He is also believed to have sprayed “juliet iz well fit n i want to shag her 100% true’ on walls around the city.

‘It’s disgraceful,’ sobbed the girl’s mother. ‘Everyone knows what a load of villains those Montagues are. They’ve been lobbing artillery at our castle on and off for the past 20 years, then that little thug starts sniffing round my baby girl. I told social services what would happen but they didn’t want to know.’

Neither of the pair has been seen in the 72 hours since Montague was caught on CCTV cameras riding his mountain bike up and down the road outside a first floor balcony window at the Capulet home. The authorities are increasingly fearful for the well-being of Juliet and have warned local chemists not to dispense poison until further notice. An all-points notice has been put out for a missing friar.

A police spokesman added: ‘We understand that Juliet is mature for her age and she speaks in iambic pentameters. However, the fact is that she is still below the age of consent and we will not tolerate paedophiles in this community. Besides, her family want to marry her off to the son of one of their friends when she is 15.’

<img src="/images/473.jpg" alt="Old Lady" "height:260px;width:280px" class="floatRight" />'Old lady now dead - of course.'

The death of a care in the community patient who died this week after attempting to swallow a horse has been described by mental health experts as a tragedy that should have been averted.

The old lady, Mrs Teasdale from Lewisham in South East London, was adjudged ‘not to be a danger to herself or others’, even after she had swallowed a series of sizeable farm animals. Defending Lewisham Social Services, Councillor Bryan Clarkson said ‘When this case first came to our attention, all we knew was that there was an old lady who swallowed a fly. I don’t know why she swallowed a fly. It was suggested that perhaps she’ll die, though at that stage it seemed unlikely.’

However subsequent warnings that the old lady had swallowed a spider to catch the fly, and then swallowed a bird to catch the spider, should have set off alarm bells according to the department’s critics. Yet their only reaction to the news that the old lady had swallowed a cat to catch the bird was ‘Fancy that, she swallowed a cat!’ when in fact she should have been sectioned under the Mental Health Act 1983. Further bizarre feats of compulsive swallowing were blithely accepted as normal behaviour – Mrs Teasdale swallowed a goat, which wouldn’t catch a dog in any case, and then a cow; obviously a herbivore and useless at catching a goat at the best of times. By the time she swallowed a horse it was simply too late and the coroner declared the old lady dead; ‘Of course.’

‘This litany of neglect is a damning indictment of Lewisham’s Social Services Department,’ he added. ‘At each stage, Mrs Teasdale should have been given appropriate mental and medical attention, instead she was just left to continue swallowing these animals under the tragic misapprehension that each would somehow catch the last one – when it is clear that her plan was seriously flawed on several fronts. Who knows how many other old ladies there are swallowing large domesticated animals?’

The real tragedy, according to medical experts, is that the original fly would have been killed by Mrs Teasdale’s stomach acid, thereby rendering any further swallowing completely pointless.
